You also want to make sure that you find the right lawyer. You will want to work with a lawyer who is used to divorces in which domestic violence or other safety issues are present. Those lawyers tend to have connections to shelters or other safe places where you can go if you need to get out and be safe. They will also have no problems with making sure that they don't contact you at home or send you any paperwork at your house. The lawyer will also be able to tell you exactly what you are going to need to make sure that you are safe after you file for divorce and possibly leave your home.
Find a Safe Place
You are also going to want to make sure that you have a safe place where you can hide if you need to. If you can find a place that your spouse doesn't know about you are going to be in a better position. If you have children or loved pets, you want to make sure that the safe place can take them as well.
